Reality Virtually Hackathon at MIT Media Lab

I developed an interactive AR experience for the Magic Leap One, which aims to aid physical therapy patients through movement routines. Taking advantage of the headset’s built-in front-facing cameras, implemented user hand-tracking in tandem with collision detection, to allow users’ own hands to function as “controllers” that trigger events. Scripting in C# using Lumin SDK for hardware communication. Developed in Unity.

Making A Skate Video

I shot, produced and co-edited this short comedic take on the current state of skateboarding videos. Shot in LA in the Summer of 2018.

ZGTO: A Piece Of The Geto

I directed and produced a short film featuring original music by Detroit-based duo ZGTO (Ghostly International).  The entire film was shot on location in Detroit.  Along with the release, I created an interactive website which included a photography series that I curated, as well as an online shop to sell custom limited edition jerseys that were featured in the film.

Motion Design

My motion design and animation work, from both commissioned and personal projects.

JUVENILE (Directing)

A music video that I wrote and directed for 'Juvenile', a track by Los Angeles artist Marc Payne. The video explores themes of self-expression, being young and black in America, the power of community, and the relationship between citizens and law enforcement. I was initially drawn to the strong message and humble beatboxing quality of the track. We realized this was an opportunity to address complex social and political ideas through the art.

ELLA (Short Film Stills)

I traveled to Manhattan, Kansas in May 2017 to document and shoot a behind the scenes making-of video, and press photos during the production of 'ELLA', a short written & directed by Dan Chen. The script was a personal story written specifically with his hometown in mind, and working on set was very collaborative. Stills are shot on 120 film.

Processing by The ICON in Los Angeles.

Ultimate Ultimate (Graphics, Main Title Design & Press)

Writer/director Jack Henry Robbins asked me to design a few logos for this mock-umentary about amateur DJs, and the collaboration extended to the entire graphic look & feel of the show. The subject matter naturally inspired me to experiment with new tools and technologies for making interactive visual art.

UX Design: AI SuperHacks Hackathon

Designed user interface for a collaborative music sharing web application that is tightly integrated with the Spotify API. Designed with Adobe XD.

JUST DOUGIE (Title Design)

Main and end title design for a comedy television pilot called 'Just Dougie', written by my friend Douglas Kim, who also stars, and directed by none-other-than Dan Chen. The show digs into what it's like to be a young, struggling, Asian actor in Hollywood.

I wanted the typography and layout to be seamless with the modern adult subject matter of the show, while also being playful enough to suggest the lighthearted tone from the very first frame. Dan knew he wanted to keep the titles simple and elegant to allow the acting and scene work to shine, which greatly influenced the overall approach to layout.

Left & Right (Directing)

In 2015, I traveled to Beldentown, California to film the musical adventure of dear friends Bisi Obateru, Tyler Garnett, and Kevin Land, known collectively as Mr Left & Mr Right. They performed at an intimate music festival called Priceless, and this documents that time.

Bear's Den - Elysium (Cinematography)

I traveled to Seattle in 2014 to shoot this Marcus Haney-directed music video. The project was intended to visually convey the feeling of being young, emotional, and needing your friends to get through life. On the day we arrived in Seattle, we learned that there had been a shooting on the SPU campus, where we were slated to start filming the following day. This threw a big curveball into our original plan, and we almost canceled the shoot. Eventually we decided to all band together as cast & crew, and channel our intense feelings into the art project at hand. It was an intense few days of filming, but I think we are all proud of the resulting film, and grateful that we had an outlet to decompress amidst tragic times.

Below the video, are production stills, 35mm.

Coldplay (Cinematography)

I traveled to Mexico City in April 2016 to shoot a Coldplay music video for director Marcus Haney. They played three consecutive sold out performances at Fora Sol, and also explored the local streets on BMX bikes, which we captured all on motion picture film.

Motion: 16mm, Super8mm.

Stills: Digital (5D).

Waiting For Mamu (Cinematography)

Pushpa Basnet runs the Butterfly Home in Kathmandu, Nepal, where she saves kids whose parents are in prison, and gives them a caring, nurturing atmosphere to grow up in. I traveled there in 2012 and 2015 to document the daily life of Pushpa and her kids. The resulting film tells their story, and it helped raise awareness and funding for Pushpa to keep going and help even more kids.

Storied Streets (Cinematography)

In 2011, I traveled across the United States in a two-car caravan, with the intention to make a documentary film about homelessness. We traveled around befriending and speaking with people from all walks of life in an attempt to inform ourselves and dispel any misconceptions we might've had.

Visually, we were interested in a naturalistic palette, as it suited the sensitive, human subjects. The majority of the film is shot handheld, because we needed to adapt quickly to situations and capture moments as they happened.

The full-length film is available on Vimeo On Demand.
